A Local Viking alternative when all you use is the GeoGrid

The right Local Viking alternative depends on which part of Local Viking you actually open. If you log in to schedule Google Business Profile posts, manage listings and reply to reviews across many locations, stay: that is what Local Viking is built for. If the only screen you look at is the GeoGrid, the map showing where a listing ranks across its area, then Local Rank Tracker does that one job for a flat price per keyword and refreshes the grid every week on its own. This page lays out both sides, using Local Viking’s own figures as published on its site in September 2026.

It is written for a business owner, or a freelancer looking after a few local clients, who signed up to Local Viking for the rank grid and is now asking whether they need the rest.

The short verdict

  • Stay with Local Viking if you post to Google Business Profiles on a schedule, manage listing details and photos for several locations, or send white-label reports to clients.
  • Switch to a flat weekly grid if you track a handful of searches for one or a few listings, and what you want each week is where you rank and who beats you.

The two tools overlap on one feature. Everything else Local Viking sells is a different job.

What Local Viking is today

Local Viking describes itself as a Google Business Profile management platform first. Its home page, read in September 2026, puts it like this:

Schedule GMB Posts, Track Snack Pack Rankings and Manage All Of Your Google My Business Properties From One Easy To Use Dashboard.

The feature menu on the same page lists GeoGrid tracking, post automation, review management, a rank tracker, listing management, scheduled photo uploads, scheduled white-label reporting and a content tool it calls GeoBooster. Its tracking section promises “Maps and local rank tracking for Mobile and Desktop” and “Automatic Scheduling For Visibility Scans”. It also offers a done-for-you management service. That is a wide toolkit, and for an agency running dozens of profiles every day it is the point.

What Local Viking costs, as of September 2026

Local Viking’s pricing page sells five agency plans, each with a number of listings, keyword credits and GeoGrid credits per month:

PlanPrice per monthListingsKeyword creditsGeoGrid credits
Single$3911,6007,500
Starter$59103,2008,100
Pro$99205,60016,200
Agency$1494017,70024,300
Enterprise$2007026,60032,400

Every plan lists unlimited posts and unlimited accounts. White-label reporting and a GeoGrid widget start at Pro. Above 70 locations the page asks you to get in touch for custom pricing. Business owners with only a handful of locations are pointed to a demo call rather than a plan.

GeoGrid scans draw on a monthly credit allowance, so the grid size, the number of keywords and how often you scan all come out of the same pot. For an agency with many listings that allowance is generous. For one listing it is still $39 a month for the whole platform.

Local Rank Tracker figures are from its pricing page today. The grid size does not change our price: a 7x7 grid costs the same 20 credits a month as a 3x3, because you pay per keyword rather than per point.

When Local Viking is the better fit

If any of these is the reason you pay for Local Viking, keep paying for it:

  • You post to Google Business Profiles. Scheduled, recurring and multi-location posts are Local Viking’s headline feature. Local Rank Tracker does not post anything.
  • You manage listing details for clients. Editing and syncing profile information, uploading photos and being told about suspensions are management jobs. We only read the map.
  • You run many listings. At 20 or 40 listings, a single plan covering all of them is hard to beat on price per location.
  • You sell reports. White-label reporting and an embeddable GeoGrid widget are agency features we do not offer.

When a flat weekly grid fits better

Local Rank Tracker is deliberately narrow. It fits when:

  • You have a few searches that matter. “Emergency plumber”, “dentist”, “coffee shop”: the handful of terms that actually bring in customers.
  • You never touch the posting calendar. If Local Viking is a rank grid you pay a management suite for, you are paying for tools you do not open.
  • You would rather not remember to scan. The grid refreshes every seven days on its own. If a scan cannot measure enough of the grid, it says so, retries within a day, and keeps showing the last good grid labelled with its date. A gap never reads as a ranking.
  • You want to see who owns which part of town. Every square shows your position (green in the top 3, amber from 4 to 10, red past 10 or outside the top 20), and pointing at a square shows the business at #1 there.
  • You also watch Google reviews. The same account runs Review Radar, which alerts you the day a negative review goes unanswered, and one press drafts a reply for one credit. Both draw on one credit balance.

What each grid tells you

The practical output of any geo-grid tool comes down to three answers, and Local Rank Tracker gives exactly those on every scan:

QuestionWhat you see
Where do I rank?Your position at every grid point
How good is that overall?Your average rank where you appear, and the share of the grid where you are in the top 3
Who is beating me?The #1 business at each point

Grids can reach 0.5, 1, 2, 5 or 10 miles from your listing, so the same tool suits a café that serves a few blocks and a plumber covering a whole metro area.

Other grid trackers worth a look

Local Viking is not the only tool in this corner. If you are comparing several, we have written up two of the others:

  • Local Falcon sells grid scans by the point and adds AI search tracking, which suits heavy scanning.
  • LeadSnap sells rank heatmap plans; that article walks through what each one costs.

Each is priced for a different amount of scanning, so the cheapest one depends on how many keywords and listings you track.

How to switch from Local Viking

  1. Check what you use. Open Local Viking and look at the last month. If the posting calendar, listing edits and reports are empty, the GeoGrid is the only thing you need to replace.
  2. List the keywords in your GeoGrid scans. Write down the searches you look at every week. For a single location it is usually a short list.
  3. Note your grid size and radius. Pick the closest match: 3x3, 5x5 or 7x7, and a radius from 0.5 to 10 miles.
  4. Create a free account. No card is needed, and the 100 starting credits cover five keywords for their first month.
  5. Find your business and add the keywords. Search by name and city, pick your Google listing, then add each search the way a customer types it. Leave out “near me”, because every grid point already searches as someone standing there.
  6. Run both for a week. Compare the two grids before you cancel anything, and save copies of any Local Viking reports you want to keep.

The bottom line

Local Viking is a Google Business Profile management suite with a rank grid inside it, and for an agency posting to and managing many profiles it is good value. If the GeoGrid is the only part you use, a flat per-keyword weekly grid is simpler and runs without you. Track your first keyword and put the grid beside the one you already have.
